Maritime Piracy Report Series
First published in January of 2011 by One Earth Future‘s Oceans Beyond Piracy program, this annual report series on maritime piracy was developed to provide data to decision-makers on the phenomenon of cargo ships being attacked off the coast of Somalia as they passed through the Gulf of Aden en route to Europe via the Red Sea. In later editions of the series, the geographic scope expanded to cover both East and West Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America.
Initially developed as two separate annual reports (The Economic Cost and the Human Cost) early iterations were light in infographics and largely inconsistent from a branding perspective. Beginning with the 2013 release of The Economic Cost of Somali Piracy 2012, the aim was to make these data-heavy reports more digestible for industry and media representatives alike. The new approach incorporated more data visualization, including the use of icons, maps, charts and tables, all designed with a consistent look and feel and helping establish this long-standing series as the go-to source for annual maritime data and analysis.
